Story Plot:

The film’s storyline involves a frequent switch between two time periods: the present day, set in 2020, and flashbacks to the years 1989-1990.

The film depicts the events of 1989–1990 in Kashmir, where Islamic militants forcibly expelled Kashmiri Hindu Pandits from the Kashmir valley using violent slogans such as Raliv Galiv ya Chaliv convert (to Islam), leave or die and Al-Safa Batte Dafa with god’s grace whole Kashmiri Pandit community will leave valley. Pushkar Nath Pandit, a teacher, fears for the safety of his son Karan, who has been falsely accused by the militants of being an Indian spy. In order to protect Karan, Pushkar asks his friend Brahma Dutt, a civil servant, for help. Brahma accompanies Pushkar to Kashmir and witnesses the brutality against the Kashmiri Pandits. He raises the issue with the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), but is subsequently suspended for his actions.

After the mysterious deaths at the zamindar’s palace, Rajasekhar seeks help from Saamiyaadi, a hermit priest, to investigate the supernatural occurrences. However, during their visit, they are attacked by Saravanan, who is possessed by Eeshwari’s spirit. Ravi manages to rescue Rajasekhar, but Saamiyaadi is left behind and is confronted by Eeshwari.

Rajasekhar then reveals to Ravi the dark truth about his past. He had forcibly married Eeshwari after falling in love with her at her wedding to Saamiyaadi’s son, Samikannu. When Eeshwari gives birth to their child, Rajasekhar discovers that the child resembles Samikannu, indicating that Eeshwari had been pregnant before their marriage. In a fit of rage, Rajasekhar has the child secretly killed and buried in the palace and then kills Eeshwari.

To cover up his crime, Rajasekhar replaces the dead child with Durai’s newborn daughter and claims her as his own. The revelation of this gruesome act sheds light on the reason behind Eeshwari’s vengeful spirit and her wrath towards Rajasekhar’s family.

Story Highlights:

Brahma raises the issue with the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, but his actions result in him getting suspended.

Review:

Rendered refugees in their own country, based on testimonials of the survivors, the film makes a strong argument that this wasn’t just an exodus, but a barbaric genocide that continues to be brushed under the carpet for political reasons. Living in exile for almost 30 years, their homes and shops encroached by the locals, the Kashmiri Pandits (KP) continue to hope for justice and most importantly, to be acknowledged. It’s strange that not many films have broached this incident despite its gruelling impact on displaced families.
