Varisu, which means ‘Heir’ in Tamil, is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Vamshi Paidipally. Co-written by Hari and Ashishor Solomon, the movie is jointly produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations and PVP Cinema. Starring Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, the film features a star-studded cast including R. Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Jayasudha, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shaam, Ganesh Venkatraman, Sangeetha Krish, VTV Ganesh, S.J Suryah, and Suman in pivotal roles. The story follows an entrepreneur’s youngest son who is named as the chairman of his father’s business, which creates resentment and jealousy among his elder brothers.
In September 2021, the production of the film began under the working title Thalapathy 66, given that it marks Vijay’s 66th appearance in a lead role. The filming commenced in April 2022 and was wrapped up in December of the same year. The movie was shot primarily in Chennai and Hyderabad, with some scenes filmed in Visakhapatnam, Ballari and Ladakh. Thaman S composed the music for the film, while Karthik Palani was the cinematographer, and Praveen K. L. was responsible for the editing. Despite the efforts of the producers to keep the movie’s details under wraps, it was frequently leaked during production.
Varisu, which was released on January 11, 2023, during the Pongal week, has received mixed reviews from critics. Despite this, the film has performed well at the box office, grossing around ₹290-310 crore. As a result, it is currently the second-highest grossing Indian film of 2023, the fifth-highest grossing Tamil film worldwide, and the highest grossing film in Vijay’s career.

The Heir
The plot of the movie revolves around Vijay Rajendran, the youngest son of a billionaire business tycoon Rajendran Palanisamy, who was disowned and thrown out of the family for not joining the family business and instead starting his own food delivery startup. Seven years later, Rajendran is diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer with limited time left to live. He decides to disclose his illness and choose one of his two elder sons, Jai or Ajay, as his successor before his death. To make the announcement, Rajendran plans a grand 65th birthday celebration, where Vijay is also invited at the request of his mother Sudha.
Upon arriving at the family home, Vijay discovers a chaotic situation where his brothers Jai and Ajay are facing their own problems. Jai is having an extramarital affair with Smita and neglecting his wife Aarthi and daughter Ria, while Ajay has a massive debt of over 500 crore rupees to a financier named Mukesh. To settle the debt, Ajay offers to divulge his company’s confidential information to his father’s business rival, Jayaprakash “JP”. The two brothers are at odds with each other and constantly vying to become their father’s successor.

Betrayal and Inheritance
During the birthday party, Vijay meets Aarthi’s younger sister, Divya, who had a crush on him since childhood, and they fall in love. The celebration takes a tragic turn when JP exposes the infidelity of Jai and the financial fraud committed by Ajay, causing chaos and distress among the family members, especially Aarthi, who decides to leave Jai. Additionally, Rajendran loses a significant business deal to JP because of Ajay’s actions. Rajendran realizes that neither of his elder sons is fit to run the business, and he asks Vijay to take over, which he initially refuses, but later agrees to do after learning about Rajendran’s terminal illness.
Jai and Ajay, out of jealousy and anger, join forces with JP and Mukesh to oust Vijay as the chairman. However, Vijay manages to overcome the obstacles and handle the family business effectively. When he rescues Ria from a human trafficking gang, Jai realizes his mistakes and reconciles with Vijay and the rest of the family. Together, Vijay and Jai stop Ajay from selling the company’s shares to JP and help him understand his mistakes. The family reunites, sharing a meal together, bringing happiness to Rajendran and Sudha. After Rajendran’s death, the three brothers unite to perform his funeral and scatter his ashes in Varanasi. The movie concludes with a message that every family may have flaws, but everyone has only one family.

The Making of Varisu
The original story for the film was conceptualized with Mahesh Babu in mind, but when he couldn’t commit to the project, the makers approached several other popular actors like Allu Arjun, Prabhas, and Ram Charan before finalizing Vijay for the lead role. In October 2021, it was announced that Prakash Raj would play a pivotal role in the film, marking his collaboration with Vijay after more than a decade since their last movie Villu (2009). Rashmika Mandanna was revealed as the female lead on her birthday, 5 April 2022, making it her second Tamil film after Sulthan (2021). The filmmakers initially considered casting Pooja Hegde as the lead actress, but decided against it since she was already doing consecutive films with other popular stars, including Vijay in Beast (2022). R. Sarathkumar was also announced as part of the cast the day after Mandanna’s confirmation.
